Research Associate Winemaker - Plant and Food Research
Background
After completing a Dip Field Tech from Lincoln University Claire began work as a Science Technician for MAF at the KeriKeri Research Station in 1984 working with kiwifruit and sub tropical fruits. After moving to Marlborough and working in the wine and viticulture industry Claire returned to study a Bachelor of Viticulture and Oenology at NMIT and Lincoln University, graduating in 2009. Claire joined the Plant and Food team in 2009 assisting with lab analysis, field work and microvinification. Since the 2010 vintage, Claires role has been Research Associate winemaker managing the microvinification facility at the Research Centre.
Expertise
Claire is responsible for making microvinifications from field viticultural trials. She also assists the sensory team with flavour and aroma profiles in Sauvignon Blanc wines.
Current Research
Claire is currently involved in the Sauvignon Blanc programme helping to determine the effect of harvest treatments on flavour profiles of wine and the influence of mechanical thinning on wine composition. She is also involved in the Designer Grapevine programme looking at berry variability and the influence on sensory profiles of wine.
