Background Sybil is a UK immigrant who got a taste of New Zealand on her first trip and was keen to return. Despite having a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Institutional Management from the University of Wales, she realised that, having taken time out to be a full time mother, she needed to upgrade her skills. She enrolled at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology, while her husband stayed on at his job in the UK, working to support her through her studies, before he joined the family in Marlborough. The family is now seeking New Zealand residency. After graduating in 2008 with a Diploma of Viticulture and Wine Production (and the Gravitas Award), Sybil joined the Research Centre in February 2009. Sybil’s previous experience was food technology-based so she says wine was a natural extension and viticulture complements her love of the outdoors. Expertise Sybil’s role is assisting with the analysis for the scientific projects underway at the Centre and, working as assistant to Laboratory Supervisor Emma Sherman, she is being trained to use the technical laboratory equipment and build on her previous industry experience. Current Research Analysing grape juice samples for a number of different projects. Parameters include soluble solids, pH, titratable acidity, organic acid quantification and analysing for cations using capillary electrophoresis, also using HPLC and spectrometry for colour and phenolics measurements on Pinot Noir.
